WHAT SHOULD FOUNDERS EXPECT TO PAY THEMSELVES AFTER RAISING THEIR FIRST ROUND?

October 25, 2021

This blog will always be less than 1000 characters, which is just a bit more than a Tweet and much more interesting.

This question very often comes back to us once founders get the first check. There is no absolute amount but too often we see founders going loose on the topic. The first check is small and there is still plenty to do with that money on the product-market fit front, so everything should be dedicated to this. When looking at how much; founders should pay themselves the minimum to survive.

It is hard sometimes, but the value you are creating is in the shares you hold, not the salary. We generally recommend founders to start paying something decent post series A and always be ready to relinquish it to extend the runway when need be! If you want and expect a big fat paycheck you are probably not meant to be a founder!
